Flyers Already a Mess
A new coaching regime is already on thin ice in Philadelphia! Two games in and a players only meeting has been called. A seven to one pounding tends to do this to teams even early on. Four goals given up in seven minutes of the game further exasperates the point. At least Steve Mason in goal manned up and took full responsibility for it all. It does not help that their current coach, Dave Hakstol, was the coach for the college team of North Dakota for over a decade right before this. People could see the Flyers as a fade early on but this level of dysfunction is surprising in how quick it came along.
Calgary Has a Rabbit Out of the Hat
Bombed at Vancouver, the Flames limped to Calgary trying to salvage the split in the home and home to open the season. Rally they had to and did for a 3-2 win to hold serve. Johnny Gaudreau got three points including the game winner in overtime to carry the day. The new three on three OT format got them the winner here. Also of good note is that the Flames rookie, Jared McCann, got his first tally of his career.
Finally, the Leafs shown some life coming from three down to tie the Senators and again rallying to tie but could not come through in the shootout. With this setback, the Babcock era starts with three straight losses. They at least salvaged a point. Hopefully the new coach should just let his team skate and score until he can gradually instill defensive tendencies. If not, it will be a repeat of last year.
