Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) – Kyle Turris scored the winning goal with 1:46
to play in overtime as the Ottawa Senators grabbed a key 4-3 win over the
Washington Capitals on Saturday.
Washington held the puck in the Ottawa end, but Turris tipped a pass away and
caught up to the puck in the neutral zone. Skating on a clean break, he buried
his shot past Braden Holtby for the win.
The win helped Ottawa stay in the hunt for a playoff spot as the team has 92
points and is three back of a wild card spot.
Clarke MacArthur and Mika Zibanejad each posted a goal and an assist while
Mark Stone also lit the lamp for the Senators, who have won three straight.
Andrew Hammond made 29 stops in the win.
“We got off to a good start and played real well then started sitting back
again,” said Turris. “We battled and we’re able to get the two points, but we
can’t keep doing this.”
Troy Brouwer had a goal and an assist while Mike Green and Marcus Johansson
also scored for the Capitals, who had a three-game winning streak halted.
Holtby finished with 24 saves.
“I thought it was a good challenge to step up and come back,” said Green. “But
we’ve got to start games better.”
Washington slipped to third place in the Metropolitan Division, one back of
the Islanders.
The Sens opened the scoring at 3:21 of the first as Stone brought the puck in
at the right point and skated down to the circle before snapping it in for his
21st of the season.
Ottawa made it a 2-0 game on the power play at 9:03 of the first as the team
controlled the puck in the Washington end after a faceoff win, and MacArthur
wristed it in from the right circle.
Just 53 seconds later, the Senators took a three-goal lead as Bobby Ryan took
a feed at the right point and slid over to the slot before sending the puck to
the left circle, where Zibanejad wristed it home for a power-play goal.
The only goal of the second period when to Washington as Johansson’s
turnaround shot from the right circle found the back of the net at 6:26.
Washington made it a one-goal game 7:18 into the third as Nicklas Backstrom
skated behind the net from left to right and threw a pass out front where
Green snapped it in.
The Caps then tied the game when Brouwer grabbed the puck in the neutral zone
and came down the left wing, burying a wrister for his 21st of the season with
4:10 left in regulation.
